ReSharper stays in the list of installed programs after Visual Studio is uninstalled
Problem
After a Visual Studio version is uninstalled, the ReSharper record for that Visual Studio version stays in the Windows list of installed programs. Uninstalling the record does not remove it.
Cause
ReSharper keeps its installation data for each Visual Studio version in a separate folder. When Visual Studio is uninstalled first, the ReSharper record for it is left without a working uninstaller.
Resolution
- Close all Visual Studio instances.
- Open the
%LocalAppData%\JetBrains\Installations\folder. - Delete all subfolders whose names start with the prefix for the uninstalled Visual Studio version (see the table below).
- Press Win+R, enter
appwiz.cpl, and press Enter to open Programs and Features. - Select the record named JetBrains ReSharper in Visual Studio <edition> <version> for the uninstalled Visual Studio version, and click Uninstall.
- When Windows reports that the uninstaller is missing and offers to remove the record, accept.
| Visual Studio version | Folder prefix |
|---|---|
| Visual Studio 2015 | ReSharperPlatformVs14 |
| Visual Studio 2017 | ReSharperPlatformVs15 |
| Visual Studio 2019 | ReSharperPlatformVs16 |
| Visual Studio 2022 | ReSharperPlatformVs17 |
| Visual Studio 2026 | ReSharperPlatformVs18 |
To free disk space, also delete the ReSharper caches for that Visual Studio version: %LocalAppData%\JetBrains\Transient\ReSharperPlatformVs<NN>, where <NN> is the number from the table.
