ReSharper is not available in Visual Studio after installation

In case ReSharper did not integrate into Visual Studio properly, please follow this guide.

I. There's no 'ReSharper' item in Visual Studio main menu

Possible reason: Check if there is "ReSharper" tab in the "Tools | Options" dialog, and ReSharper is not suspended.

  • If there's no such dialog or it shows an error, continue to the next Part II of this guide (below).
  • If ReSharper is shown as 'Suspended' in this dialog, use the "Resume" button.
  • If the page says that ReSharper is not suspended but yet not running, use "Suspend" and then "Resume" button to retry starting the product. You might see the license dialog if there's a problem with licensing, or the "This pre-release build of ReSharper has expired" message. Follow the instructions in these dialogs to resolve the issue.
  • If there is "The application was requested to shut down with a ShutdownRequested call" message, please follow https://resharper-support.jetbrains.com/hc/en-us/articles/207775459.

II. There's no 'ReSharper'/'ReSharper Ultimate' tab in "Tools | Options" dialog, or it shows an error

  • Run Visual Studio with /resetskippkgs command line key (e.g. "devenv.exe /resetskippkgs") or delete "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\VisualStudio\{VS_version}.0_Config" branch in Windows registry.
  • If '/resetskippkgs' run and deleting the registry branch doesn't help, check if there's folder under '%LocalAppData%\Microsoft\VisualStudio\{VS_version}.0\Extensions\JetBrains\ReSharperPlatformVs{VS_version}' and there are 'extension.vsixmanifest' and 'vspackage.pkgdef' files.
  • If there are no such files, run 'Repair' on Resharper installation in 'ReSharper Ultimate' installer you used to install ReSharper.
    • Repairing ReSharper installation can fix integration issues.
  • If it's still not there and there are some exceptions during repairing process, check http://resharper-support.jetbrains.com/hc/en-us/articles/207243165 and https://resharper-support.jetbrains.com/hc/en-us/articles/206931919 articles about common errors
  • Run Visual Studio with Local Administrator rights (e.g. 'Run as Administrator').

That worked for me. Thanks Alex ...

So i initially ran the msi from desktop.

then i moved it to another folder in c drive with admin permission and disabled my antivirus, and now its available in VS2010 and VS2012 ...

For me it worked after start installation from CommandLine that was runned as Administrator. I start the installation with command: msiexec /i ReSharperSetup.x.y.z.w.msi /l*v C:\resharper_install_log.txt

Thanks for support!

@ Mlakmal, could you please let us know your Antivirus Software name and its version? We will contact the antivirus vendor about this issue. Thank you in advance!

I am using corporate version of Symantec Endpoint Protection

0

@ Mlakmal, thanks. Could you please tem me know the exact build version of Symantec, as well as your virus signature database version? Both should be available in Help | About dialog of the antivirus software.

I got VS2012 Ultimate and VS2013 Preview running on the same machine, VS2012 using R# 7.1 and VS2013 using R# 8beta. Upgraded to R# 8RTM for VS2013, which went smoothly, entered license code and all was well. Not so with VS2012. I uninstalled R# 7.1, then integrated R# 8 in VS2012. No R# would show up, neither in the menu nor in options. Following this guide I noticed that there was no Jetbrains folder in Extensions. Tried Repair a couple of times to no avail. I then copied the Jetbrains folder from VS2013 over to VS2012 and lo and behold, R# was once again available in VS2012. But I guess that's not the way R# is supposed to be installed is it?

@ Thorsten, running the installer with Administrator rights could help in this case as well. Looks like the installer failed to copy the needed files there for some reason. I've added this step to the guide now.

I have Visual studio 2008 and 2012 running on same machine, have recently installed 2012.

Re-shaper appear and works in 2008 but not in 2012, have tried repair option but didn't work. Also there is no Jetbrains folder in C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 11.0\Common7\IDE\Extensions

Can you help?

0

@Rsharma, just running Repair won't help in this case. Please re-install ReSharper completely for this (Uninstall, and then Install). You'll be able to select the appropriate integration options, including VS2012.

I had the same issue. Integration in VS 2008 was OK, but not in 2010 + 2012. I had tried all of the above (Run installer from cmd as admin, change, uninstall, reinstall,...) The trick was to unload the trendmicro officescan client (Program version 10.5.2328) and the reinstall.

I tried all of the above (Run installer from cmd as admin, change, uninstall, reinstall,...) as well except Raf's -  'unload the trendmicro officescan client (Program version 10.5.2328) and the reinstall' . Still have issues. Noticed the Jetbrains/Resharper  folder under Program Files(86) folder instead of the C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 11.0\Common7\IDE\Extensions. This could be a problem. How do we get it set right? Note: Version 7.1.3 works like a charm with VS 2012.

Okay. I got  my installation working creating all under C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 11.0\Common7\IDE\Extensions. Still, Resharper not showing under menus. There is no when resharper is selected from tools/options. Now I'm going to try part II from the beginning.

I have the same problem with Resharper 8.0.2 (8.0.2000.2660) and VS2012/VS2013. I've uninstalled, reinstalled, reinstalled-as-admin etc, but I can't get the Resharper item in the VS main menu to show up. Suspending and unsuspending doesn't work either (so yes, it does show up in Tools->Options).

Any more ideas on how to solve this problem?

@ J, please try the last suggestion with checked build as it is described in the last step of Part I of this guide.

@Alex Berezoutsky I did, you should have gotten a ton of reports - I spent a few minutes clicking and clicking and clicking the button to send Exception reports to JetBrains. Hope that helps....

All, I was able to resolve the issue after setting the HKCU\Software\Policy\Microsoft\Windows\Installer\AlwaysInstallElevated registry key to 0.

Once disabled, the installer prompted for elevated permissions via UAC and the product worked as expected.

This didn't work for me; I tried installing as admin, elevated.. nothing helps. Resharper 8 cannot be used. And the tons of exceptions I sent using the checked version were said to be 'Not Resharper exceptions." Which might very well be, but the problem remains that everything works in VS2012 and VS2013 except for Resharper 8.

J, you could try running ProcMon and filtering on msiexec.  If it's a permissions issue, you'll see the errors in the log.

Complete uninstall and install fixed it for me. R# 8.0.2 menu is now available in both VS 2012 and 2013.

0

I first installed R# 8.0.2 for VS2012 and later tried to add integration for VS2010 via the installer which didn't work. I tried all approches describe above bot none of those didn't work either. The solution for me was to uninstall R# completely an the reinstall it.

0

I forgot to mention that I uninstalled and reinstalled R# with the installer through CLI with administrator privileges and logging enabled (msiexec /i ReSharperSetup.x.y.z.w.msi /l*v C:\resharper_install_log.txt)

I finally managed to solve this problem on my machine; while reinstalling ReSharper and even VS didn't help, one thing did: Deleting the %APPDATA%\JetBrains\ReSharper folder. This restored ReSharper to working condition in VS2012 as well as VS2013.

Deleting the %APPDATA%\JetBrains\ReSharper folder worked for me after installing it from "SAFE" folder instead of Downloads.

Hi, I've come across this error and nothing suggested here helps. I have W7 64 with VS 2013 and R# 8.2 installed and they were working just fine until all of a sudden.. Dude.. where's resharper? From out of the blue, just gone. Gone in the menu but still present in the options page, not disabled there and disable/re-enable doesn't work, reinstall doesn't work (haven't tried reinstalling vs yet as it's a slightly more complicated procedure for me). I wanted to try the checked build but after having created an account with the support site form, I get a Unauthorized on the http://devnet.jetbrains.com/docs/DOC-280 link from above.
Ok.. so what the heck happened? I didn't install anything, there were no VS updates going on. Could it be the patches from Microsoft that came out earlier this day? What do I do now? Do I open a support ticket?

Same problem here, tried every suggestion without any luck, installing R# 8.2.0.2160 on my machine with both VS2013 and 2012 result in no R# menu in VS2012 and a disabled R# menu in VS2013. in both cases option entry is available under Tools->Options menu but stopping/starting R# from button does nothing. No relevant errors reported during install.

Opened request #8737 but got no feedback yet.
