How to collect a ReSharper memory snapshot in Visual Studio

Collect a memory snapshot

  1. In Visual Studio, go to (Extensions) | ReSharper | Help | Profile Visual Studio.
  2. Next to Attachments, click + and select Memory Snapshot. The first time, ReSharper downloads its self-profiling tool, which can take some time.

  3. Wait while ReSharper shows Getting memory snapshot. This takes about one minute. The snapshot then appears under Attachments.
  4. In Subject and Description, say which action makes memory use grow and how much memory Visual Studio uses.
  5. Optional: click change account and select Browser authentication. The report is then not anonymous, and the ReSharper team can contact the reporter for more details.
  6. Click Submit.

Upload the snapshot manually if Submit fails

  1. Under Attachments, right-click the snapshot.
  2. Select Open File Location.
  3. Upload the file to JetBrains Uploads, or share it through a cloud storage service.
  4. Send the upload ID or the link to the ReSharper support team.

Collect a snapshot when Visual Studio crashes

If Visual Studio runs out of memory and crashes before the snapshot is submitted, collect the snapshot with standalone dotMemory. Attach dotMemory to the running devenv.exe process as described in Profile Running Process, then click Get Snapshot when memory use is high.
