Incrementally unhighlighting usages

I loved being able to incrementally unhighlight multiple layers of usage highlighting by pressing ESC repeatedly.  Now, all layers of usage highlighting disappear altogether upon first press of ESC key (instead of unhighlighting last one in reverse order, which was great).  Is that the new expected behavior or could I do anything about it?
