How to know which setting is in effect?
I have trouble figuring out which setting is in effect, from user specific to team specific to machine defaults. The setting I want to configure is where solution caches are stored. This is the ordering and the settings:
- [personal] layer is User local settings folder
- [team-shared] layer says User local settings folder (we have not specified this, I think this is the default)
- [This computer] layer has a custom folder. This has been specified by me to be my personal setting on all solutions. This is the one I'd like to be in effect.
Now, how do I know which one is in effect?

If the personal layer and team-shared layer have a default value in settings, then a custom value specified in the computer layer should be applied.
Do you have some troubles with settings being applied?

I have figured it out and it is working as expected. However, it is difficult (in general) to know what is the default of any setting. In this case there is no indicator, for example, other than the default seems to be the first alternative. If there was an indication that the default was being used, then it would be easier to learn how to use the settings layers. Better user experience if you ask me. This is what I am seeing. There's no indication what is default. Also I would have to search through 3 layers (minimum) to determine what is the effective setting.
