[221] Unit Test Runner Debug Mode

Just wondering if there is a quick fix or work-around for this problem? I
can't run unit tests in debug mode without ReSharper Unit Test Runner
throwing an exception and becoming unusable until VS2005 is restarted or the
addin is reloaded. I can run unit tests not in debug mode just fine.

I have created a tracker issue:

Hello Mark,

could you please tell us what is the startup project of your solution when
you're trying to debug uni tests?
And what is the active configuration of that project? Thanks.

The startup project is a vs2005 local (no iis) asp.net web project with
debug active configuration.

Dmitry,
I just installed ReSharper version 223 and the problem still exists but
exhibits different behavoir. Now, I get a modal dialog asking me to select a
startup project when one is already selected. The error dialog message is:

"ReSharper Unit Test Runner could not find startup project.
Please select a project in your solution as the startup project"

Hello Mark,

the problem is that not any project is suitable for debugging Unit Tests.
The reason is that
ReShaper silently modifies the active configuration of the startup project
to launch the
Unit Test Runner executable. Not every project type allows such modification.
In particular, Web sites
cannot be used for debugging, as they launch a Web browser for debugging.
Two questions:

1) Did the debugging with Web site startup project work for you in older
builds of ReSharper?
2) Have you got another project in your solution (e.g. ClassLibrary) which
you can select as the startup for
debugging?

BTW, the error message you're seeing should be more clear, we'll fix it.

Hello Mark,

concerning 2) - perhaps I was unclear. The question was : can you choose
another project (or create an
artificial empty one) which you can use as the startup project for ReSharper
Unit Test Runner? The problem
is that it needs a C# or C++ project for which it can modify the debug configuration.

Hello Mark,

do you see this exception always you're trying to debug test with that startup
project? Could
you also please set a break on any exception (Debug|Exceptions) and notice
