Build 8.0.13 crashed unexpected

This morning i started my VS 2010 with R# 8.0.13 installed and load a VB solution. Then i started my browser to surf a little bit. After around half an hour i closed the browser and as VS became the foreground window it just crashes with the statndard popup that VS did not work any more and needs to restart. I had this issue in the past because of memory problems. After using the wrappers from OutOfMemoryException Fix i did not have the problem in the past.

Klaus,

Could you please check out other suggestions and info from this article: http://resharper-support.jetbrains.com/entries/24765142-Visual-Studio-with-ReSharper-is-freezing-and-or-crashing
Let me know if it helps or not.

Thanks!

These suggestions i have checked before i posted the problem. If i use the wrapper the problem do not occur. With former R# releases i had the crashes only when i load a specific VB solution, with the current EAP VS crashes even if i load very small test solutions, but only if i don't use the wrapper (mostly i doubleclick on the solution in the windows explorer).

Hi Klaus,

Thanks for the info.
Could you please dusable the 'out of memory' fix and reproduce the crash with running this 'capture traces' tool: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/58560757/CaptureTraces.zip
This tool will capture VS stacktraces to the output folder - after running the tool, please ZIP the entire 'output' folder and attach the archive here. Also, please copy and paste here 'Help | About MS Visual Studio | Copy Info' information.

Thank you in advance!

One more addition - you need to run Capture Traces tool as soon as VS crashes, not before the crash occurs.
Thanks!

i investigated the problem a bit deeper by opening several different VB and C# solutions via the open dialog of VS and by doubleclicking the .sln file in the explorer. The crash is reproducible for 2 bigger VB solutions (one about 110k lines the other about 550k lines), but only if i doubleclick on the solution file in the explorer. Another VB solution with about 140K lines is loaded without crash. C# solutions are loaded without crash regardless of their size.

Hello Klaus,

Thank you very much for the information and stacktraces. I've logged all information here in YouTrack for further investigation by our QA Team here: http://youtrack.jetbrains.com/issue/RSRP-379471.

Klaus,

could you please describe how you collected the data. The stacktraces does not look like the ones that lead to crash of Visual Studio. We have several guesses:
1. Please, try ReSharper 8 RTM build
2. Try to open Visual Studio with no solution open, suspend ReSharper and close Visual Studio. Then open the problematic solution and resume ReSharper after it is loaded. If this leads to a crash then repeat the procedure and run CaptureTraces before enabling ReSharper.
3. Another thing that may affect is JetNativeHooks.dll. Please, try the following: remove the library from in ReSharper install folder /x86, /x64 anb run Visual Studio.

Klaus,

Have you tried ReSHarper 8 Release? How is it?
Link for download is: http://www.jetbrains.com/resharper/download/index.html

Please let me know.
Thanks!

Hi Alex,

please apologize my late answer. Meanwhile i licensed R# 8.0 via my employer and it works mostly to my satisfaction. There are some minor handling and performance issues but they will not really disturb me while working. At work i have to work with VB most of the time. R# Intellisense sometimes makes wrong auto completion because it popups where i don't expect it. Currently i'm playing with the settings to reduce this. And there is the old R# performance problem editing large VB files. If you edit VB files larger than around 5.000 to 10.000 lines the editor often hangs for a significant time. This is also noticeable in R# 8 but it's much much better than in previous releases. Also VS startup time is significant longer than without active R#. Sometimes i have to wait more than 2 minutes until VS is up.

Klaus

Klaus,

it's really great to hear the performance is improved. Did you manage to capture a snapshot of slow Visual Studio startup?

Hello Sergey,

i installed dotTrace trial this morning and made the snapshot. It took around 2,5 Minutes until VS2010 was completely started. As i can't access FTP-Servers from work i put the snapshot on my skydrive. You can download it here: http://sdrv.ms/1547ghn. I'm using the latest EAP build 8.0.1000.1404.

Klaus,

thanks a lot for the snapshot. It shows that IO is very slow for unknown reason. Isn't ReSharper installed on a remote drive? Do you have any anti-virus software running?

First i want to thank you for the analysis of my problem.

R# is installed on my local drive. But slow IO may be caused by the installed anitvirus software. I'm not happy with it because i recognize a noteable performance decrease every day between 12 an 14 o'clock because of heavy hard disk IO (i think because of a full virus scan). But i'm not able to configure the software because of the strict policy of the company i work for. On the other hand there is a software installed which automatically looks for updates and installs them in background without any visual hint. So it seems that the performance problems are related to the configuration of my PC at work. I just tested the startup time of VS on my notebook at home. It's very much faster (but there i use VS2103 preview instead of VS 2010). The company i work for is just migrating from Window XP to Window 7 and i will get a new PC in the next days. Maybe the problem is solved then. I will inform you about it.

Regards
Klaus
