Really Bad

I am a huge fan of Resharper. I have been using it for a long time in VS 2003. I wouldn't want to code in that product without it.

Unfortunately, this new version doesn't even come close in quality. I realize this is Beta software but are you guys doing any testing before putting out a build?

I am testing an Addin and every time I close the VS instance that was running my addin, VS crashes. If I go to the Addin menu and remove resharper, it starts backup next time I open Visual Studio.

I can work around annoying bugs because as a developer, I understand. But this version (whatever I downloaded today) should not have been released. I can't use beta software that won't let me work at all.

Hello Mark,

1) We always do some testing before publishing a new build. Surely this testing
is very far from
exhaustive, but there is an obvious trade-off between doing extensive testing
and publishing new builds
frequently. We're biased toward the latter.

2) This is a known problem that VS crashes on exit. Unfortunately, the problem
is rather hard and we're still investigating it. If we waited for it to be
fixed, we'd be unable to publish any new builds. Since it doesn't affect
normal work in the IDE, we've decided that it's possible to live with it
for some time.

3) I'm not sure what you mean by 'If I go to the Addin menu and remove
resharper, it starts backup next time I open Visual Studio'. If you mean
that disling the 'Startup' checkbox
doesn't work in a sense that the next time you launch VS the checkbox is
enabled and ReSharper is loaded,
then it's a known bug in VS 2005 with this checkbox not persisting its state
properly.

4) Nobody says that the released version will be of so low a quality. And
I don't understand -
are the problems you mentioned really only ones that prevent you from working
productively or are you
experiencing other ones, more serious and/or annoying?

Thanks.

mark,

AFAIK all this bugs are documented - you can spend 5 minutes in the EAP
newsgroup to know what to expect, so there's no reason to post a rant.
After all, we're talking about pre-release software.

Regarding VS.NET 2005: Yes, it's sometime a pain in the ass, though it
has improved a lot (I haven't moved since #221 because it works so nice
on my machine). And let's face it: Coding without R# is much worse - so
take your pick ;)

Cheers,
Philipp

I'm using the latest R# on VS2005 (v227) and (for me) it's a VAST improvement over all previous versions. In fact, it's the first really usable version for me. In particular it seems much faster. There are still a few broken things here and there, and VS does crash every time I exit, but it's better than before :)

I'm experiencing the crash on closing each time - quite annoying if you orget to turn the "restart" check box off! Otherwise it is getting better.
