VS 2010 RC uses a ton of memory and is unresponsive during startup when R#5 is enabled

Lately whenever I start VS 2010 RC, it takes forever to start. I mean after 5 minutes, I am seeing continuous memory usage increase to over 3gigs and VS 2010 is unresponsive. I have to kill it. I haven't loaded any projects yet. I thought the install went bad so I reinstalled VS 2010. Still same problem. I uninstalled R#5 and VS 2010 starts in less than 10 seconds. I repeated the R# install and uninstall 3 times and I can confirm that R#5 is causing the problem or something in VS 2010 does not like R#5. I just did the test with the lates build 1648.

This behavior also happens in Tools -> options -> Resharper

Any ideas why this is happening?

Hello abdu,

This is not something we ever saw, and sure it is not something meant to
happen. Is it possible you can attach debugger and tell us what the program
is doing? Or may be run it with dotTrace 4 profiler for about a minute and
send us snapshot? Thanks in advance!

Do you mean attach a debugger or dotTrace to Visual Studio itself? I am not sure if you understand my post. This is a problem with Visual Studio itself and not my program. Visual Studio hasn't loaded any projects yet. It's during VS startup before loading any of my projects. I am hoping to resolve this before the release of R#5.

Exactly. VS is hosting CLR, so both managed debugger and dotTrace 4 should
work for the managed part of VS.

The problem was with the different PowerToys installations. I kept installing the newer versions and the very odd thing is that  they were piling up in the programs applet. There were several duplicates there and I uninstalled all of them. I have installed hundreds of apps in my life and I have never seen a duplicate entry in the programs applet yet the PowerToys installer did it. The entries had the same file size and the same version (even though the version # should have a build # in it).

The PowerToys installer should uninstall the previous version first before doing an install. It never mentions there's a prior version already installed. it doesn't work like R#'s installer.

I am glad I found the solution because Visual Studio would just run out of memory every time I start it.
