Syntax Coloring doesn't work in VS2003

I'm using version 2.0.204

The Syntax Coloring doesn't work in VS2003 at least for me.

The Syntax Coloring start with a strange behavior after an undefined
period of time and for unknown reasons in unknown circumstances.

I'm dealing with this issue from version 1.5 and I thought in version
2.0 it would be fixed, but the problem continue.

It's a very annoying issue and severely affect the code readability.

I had not installed any other add-in. Additionally I have reinstalled
VS2003 and ReSharper several times as well as many other needless
approaches.

I'm sending you 2 attachments with the Syntax Coloring after its strange
behavior started.

I hope this issue can be fixed soon.

Best Regards
Gianfranco

Hello Gianfranco,

as far as I understand the problem,
you can't see the VS keyword coloring. Please note that it's a VS feature,
not ReSharper's one. We have no idea why it stops working, but we can investigate
if
the problem caused by some actions on ReSharper's side. As a first step,
you can try to disable ReSharper's highlighting using ReSharper|Options|General
and check if this makes any difference.

Hello Gianfranco,

so if you re-enable ReSharper highlighting, will the VS syntax coloring eventually
disappear?

Hi Dmitri

Yes, It disappear.

Again start with the same strange behavior.

When I type Enter at the end of a statment the next line doesn't begin
in the same place than previous statment, it begin elsewhere.

Additionally the Ctl+Z causes the Error = Unknown undo/redo error.

I send you an attachment with the Error MessageBox.

I hope you can fix it because this issue is really annoying and affect
my productivity.

Hello Gianfranco,

in order for us to try to fix such an issue, we should have a complete understanding
of its source
or / and a way to reproduce it. For now, I suspect that ReSharper somehow
causes a corruption
of VS editor's internal data structures, although I have no idea how exactly
this happens.

More questions I'd like you to answer:
1) Does the problem reproduce on certain files or an all files you open in
the editor? Can the files
it reproduces on be characterized somehow (e.g. all of them are WinForms)?
2) Does closing and re-opening of a problematic file helps to get rid of
the problem in this file?

Thank you in advance for your help.

Hi Dmitry

Sure, I can give you all the info what you need.

Hardware info

AMD Athlon XP 3000+ 2.11 Ghz
1 GB RAM
Windows XP SP 2 English

1) Does the problem reproduce on certain files or an all files you open
in the editor? Can the files
it reproduces on be characterized somehow (e.g. all of them are WinForms)?

The problem reproduces in all Files in WinForms applications.
I'm not working in ASP.NET Projects.

2) Does closing and re-opening of a problematic file helps to get rid of
the problem in this file?

Yes, but after I type Enter to insert a new statement inmediately start
the strange behavior.

Even more, I installed VS2003 and ReSharper 2.0.204 in a clean Windows
installation and I got the same behavior.

Maybe I forgot some details but if you need more info let me know.

Really for me it's very difficult work without ReSharper, It's a tool
that causes addiction.

Gianfranco

is it possible for you to isolate a certain file into a small solution on

you can reproduce the problem?

Hello Gianfranco,

this is not a known issue for us.

I understand that you can't disclose the original code of the solution. Do
you mean
that if you create a new WinForm app project in VS, you'll eventually get
the same problem
with disappearance of syntax coloring in that project?

How long does it take to reproduce it on a fresh WinForms project and what
should I do in order to
do this? Thanks.

In a fresh WinForms Project happens after about 45 minutes and 50+ lines
of code (This info is absolutely approximate).

In a fresh WinForms Project with 10 or 20 lines of code it doesn't
happen, but in a little Solution I stay not many time (This info is
absolutely approximate).

A new file in a solution dealing with the issue the strange behavior
starts inmediately.

I don't know exactly what you should do to cause the problem because
suddenly happen in a normal scenario, apparentely without reason, really
I have no idea why this happen.

Maybe you could do what I do

Normal Coding
Define Variables
Aritmetic Operations
Ctl+Z (Is very strange that this option stop work and throw an Error)
Intellisense
All the features that ReSharper Offers.
Copy and Paste

Almost all the files have the little square in Green, where ReSharper
shows Code Analisis.

OK, let's try a quite different approach. Just work in the VS until the problem
occurs. Then
attach the debugger (another instance of VS) to the devenv.exe process (in
the Managed only mode),
set break on any exception, and continue to work for some time in the 'corrupted'
situation. Open
and close files, type in, try to do all you're doing while coding. If the
debugger breaks,
then an exception has occurred. Please post some stack traces of such exceptions
here. Unfortunately,
most likely exceptions will occur, since they may happen during normal
work, and we will have
to filter them.

My idea is that an exception may happen that gives us some clues to the reason
of the problem.

Thanks in advance.

It's Ok.

Anyway I think that should be interesting to know if other Users face

Yes, it would be interesting. So if someone else is looking at this thread,

Hi Dmitry

This is unbelievable, after install Build 205 everything works how is
expected, at least until now.

I don't know if this could be related with the problem since I had to
reinstall Windows Script 5.6.0.8825 because it got corrupted, I don't
know why, but happen. If this has some relation with the issue let me know.

About Build 205 I realize that the initial load has improved and I feel
the product more Stable.

Can you repeat this problem on a simple solution? Also, what sequence of
steps leads to the
problem manifesting itself?

No, I can't. In new Projects it Happens in an aleatory way. But in the
Project where I'm working inmediately after I open the "Designer Window
of a Form" in the "Code Window" the Syntax Coloring and almost all the
ReSharper functionality get corrupted.

Dmitry, I would like find out more help, but for this issue is not easy
and it's a big timeconsuming. Really I have no time.

Best Regards
Gianfranco
