Frequent "Processing source files" CPU spikes

I'm using build 2151 and I notice that with a solution open in VS 2010 and my computer just sitting there idle, about every 10 seconds I see a quick "Processing source files" in the status bar, followed shortly by a CPU spike.  Is this normal?  It's kind of distracting to see it so often!

Hello Tim,

Could you please check if this happens with any solution or just with a particular
one? Thank you!

I tried 3 different solutions (about equal in size) and it seemed to happen with all of them.  The spikes seemed to be much less pronounced in one of them so I thought it was maybe because there were less files open when I loaded that solution.  But I disproved that theory by closing all the files in one of the problem solutions.

Some new info.  It was getting pretty bad (the IDE seemed to lag whenever these spikes were happening) so I went to reinstall an older build to see if I could make it go away.  I installed builds 2150 and 2145 but was still seeing it.  Finally, I jumped back to 2135 (the next earlier build which had at least 3 stars in VS 2010 :)) and the problem seemed to go away completely.  Hope that helps!!

Hello Tim,

Thank you for this information! Could you please go back to a build that
has this behavior, run Visual Studio (devenv.exe) with /ReSharper.LogFile
"C:\log.txt" /ReSharper.LogLevel Verbose command line parameters, work with
your solution for some time (make sure 'Processing source files' message
appears a couple of times) and attach the resulting log.txt file here.

Well unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on how you look at it), I upgraded to build 2151 and it doesn't seem to be happening anymore!  I'll keep an eye out for it and post a log if I see it happening again.

I'm getting this issue too. 50%+ CPU usage every so often, on all solutions, though it seems to be worse for larger solutions with lots of projects?

I have to force end devenv.exe to make it respond.

I've turned on verbose logging and will post the log in a few days - at least when it happens again anyway!

Been getting it a few times today... looked at the log and it seemed to contain quite a lot of proxy issues, so I disabled the anonymous feedback option, and it seems to have stopped.

I am, however, still getting a lot of lag within any ASPX and razor pages, specifically when I move the caret to an identifier within a javascript block... though tbh, its hard to tell. I've attached a few hours of debug log...

Hello Chris,

Could you please capture a performance snapshot when Visual Studio with ReSharper
lags (by following the instructions at http://tinyurl.com/6xgxpw5), upload
it to ftp://ftp.intellij.net/.uploads/ and describe exactly what were you
doing and what happened when the snapshot was taken? Thank you!

Well, asside from DotTrace being extremely slow, I've uploaded it. It's called "EditingJavaScriptIdentifiers.zip"... and surprisingly, I was editing JavaScript identifiers :)

Tbh, the issue has largely disappeared since I disabled anonymous feedback... though I still get a few peformance issues with intellisense in ASPX pages.

Hello Chris,

Thank you very much for the snapshot! One additional question: did you leave
the 'Start profiling the application immediately' checkbox checked while
capturing this snapshot or you've pressed 'Start profiling' button on dotTrace
controller window after Visual Studio has started and finished loading the
solution?

I probably started immediately... the instructions on the link you provided mentioned I needed to click "Start Profiling", but it was already profileing by then...

Hello Chris,

Could you please uncheck the 'Start profiling immediately' option when running
Visual Studio under dotTrace and press 'Start Profiling' just before you
start typing identifiers in JavaScript. At the moment the snapshot contains
a lot of information about ReSharper startup and solution opening and it's
hard to see the actual problem. Thank you!
