Error 1721 Installing ReSharper

Hi,

Whenever I attempt to install Resharper 2.5 I get this error near the
end of the install (at the stage "Removing backup files"):

""
Error 1721. There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A
program required for this install to complete could not be run. Contact
your support personnel or package vendor.
""

After I exit the install and choose to view the error log, I see this
around the apparent error location:

I have already checked the FAQ for the issue, the only entry that comes
close is at
http://support.jetbrains.com/kb/entry.jspa?externalID=252&categoryID=28,
but it is unhelpful and the error code is slightly different. My problem
seems like that of sjo_ecolog but I cannot start VS even when the error
dialog is showing. I have also already tried totally reinstalling Visual
Studio 2005 SP1, but this made no difference. If it matters, I'm running
Windows Vista, and am trying to install ReSharper on a box that has had
it on previously without problems.

Thanks in advance for help in resolving this issue!

Hello Max,

have you previously installed ReSharper on this machine? If yes, the first
thing to check if it is still listed among the programs in Add/Remove Programs
and try to uninstall it. You can also use the Windows Installer Cleanup utility
if the previous build doesn't want to uninstall normally.

I have already checked the FAQ for the issue, the only entry that
comes close is at

8, but it is unhelpful and the error code is slightly different. My
problem seems like that of sjo_ecolog but I cannot start VS even when
the error dialog is showing. I have also already tried totally
reinstalling Visual Studio 2005 SP1, but this made no difference. If
it matters, I'm running Windows Vista, and am trying to install
ReSharper on a box that has had it on previously without problems.

Thanks in advance for help in resolving this issue!

Hello Max,

have you previously installed ReSharper on this machine? If yes, the
first thing to check if it is still listed among the programs in
Add/Remove Programs and try to uninstall it. You can also use the
Windows Installer Cleanup utility if the previous build doesn't want to
uninstall normally.

Hi,

Of course I have already checked that it has been removed, and even
tried the WIC utility. Furthermore, there are no more references to the
word "Resharper" in the registry or my C: drive...

Thanks for your response,

Hello Max,

according to the log, VS tries to load ReSharper (and fails to do that) when
you run 'devenv /setup'. Are you sure that you have no
ReSharper* keys under HKCU(HKLM)\Software\Microsoft\VisualStudio\8.0\AddIns?

Like I said, "ReSharper" is not found by a registry editor search. In
fact, the "AddIns" key does not even exist in either the HKCU or HKLM hives.

Hello Max,

OK, got it - I double-checked your original log, and it appears that the
real problem in 'InstallUtil' failing durin installation:

There can be a couple of reasons for it, but the most frequest ones is that
the necessary VS assemblies (VSLangProj, Extensibility, EnvDTE)
are missing in the GAC. Could you please check if all these assemblies are
installed into GAC on your machine? If no, please install the missing ones
manually. If all the assemblies are there, I propose to run 'InstallUtil'
during installation when the error dialog is on screen (similar to how you
run
'devenv 'setup') - this should print out any exceptions / errors that happen.

Thanks.

One small note - it's not quite 'InstallUtil' from the .NET framework, it's
our custom application (packaged into the installer) with progress UI. However,
it calls InstallUtil
under the hood, so it shouldn't really make any difference.

Hi Dmitry,

I ran 'installutil
E:\Appropriations\MSDNAA\en_vs_2005_pro_cd1>installutil /VsVersion="8.0"
/InstallDir="C:\Program Files\ReSharper\VS2005
" "C:\Program
Files\ReSharper\VS2005\bin\JetBrains.ReSharper.VS.dll"' at the failure
point and it actually worked without reporting any errors. Whats more,
when I run Visual Studio now it actually seems to work perfectly! I then
tried pressing "OK" on the error, letting the rollback happen and trying
the install again: however, it still fails.

So, at the moment I have a working ReSharper installation, but if I ever
press "OK" on this error dialog it will be deleted again :-). Will there
be any bad side effects if I terminated the installer forcefully? It
seems the uninstall entry in Control Panel has been created now, at
least, but I don't know if there is more installation information
pending write..

Anyway, from what you told me it looks like the custom InstallUtil you
are using is causing the issue (since the real InstallUtil works just fine).

Thanks for your quick responses, even on a weekend!

Hello Max,

unfortunately, in our experience terminating the installation may result
in quite unexpected behavior of the subsequent installations,
because it leaves the installation in a 'limbo' state. What I'd propose to
do is to locate the our custom installer program. It's not straightforward,
as
it is extracted into a temporary file during installation and later deleted.
However, you still can locate the log of the current installation (while
it is in progress) log first, and there you will find the name of the extracted
custom installer in the error entry like in my previous post (just search
for 'error' in the log; 2nd-3th occurrence is probably what you need). Having
learned the name of the custom installer, you can try to run it manually
like 'installutil'. This way almost all the conditions of failing custom
installation will be repeated (BTW, I believe you're installing ReSharper
under an administrative account, aren't you?), so running it manually should
also result in failure which we can debug.

the failure point and it actually worked without reporting any errors.
Whats more, when I run Visual Studio now it actually seems to work
perfectly! I then tried pressing "OK" on the error, letting the
rollback happen and trying the install again: however, it still fails.

So, at the moment I have a working ReSharper installation, but if I
ever press "OK" on this error dialog it will be deleted again :-).
Will there be any bad side effects if I terminated the installer
forcefully? It seems the uninstall entry in Control Panel has been
created now, at least, but I don't know if there is more installation
information pending write..

Anyway, from what you told me it looks like the custom InstallUtil you
are using is causing the issue (since the real InstallUtil works just
fine).

Thanks for your quick responses, even on a weekend! Max

Hi Dmitry,

Thanks for your continued help. I have tried to locate the custom
InstallUtil program, but the log seems to reference
"C:\Windows\Installer\MSI2005.tmp": however C:\Windows\Installer does
not contain any .tmp files.

I >am< running ReSharper under an administrative account, but UAC is
enabled. However, a UAC elevation is offered during ReSharper setup,
which I always take. I'll try running the setup as an administrative
user manually.

Thanks,
Max

Hello Max,

unfortunately, in our experience terminating the installation may result
in quite unexpected behavior of the subsequent installations,
because it leaves the installation in a 'limbo' state. What I'd propose
to do is to locate the our custom installer program. It's not
straightforward, as
it is extracted into a temporary file during installation and later
deleted. However, you still can locate the log of the current
installation (while it is in progress) log first, and there you will
find the name of the extracted custom installer in the error entry like
in my previous post (just search for 'error' in the log; 2nd-3th
occurrence is probably what you need). Having learned the name of the
custom installer, you can try to run it manually like 'installutil'.
This way almost all the conditions of failing custom installation will
be repeated (BTW, I believe you're installing ReSharper under an
administrative account, aren't you?), so running it manually should
also result in failure which we can debug.

Ah, now this is interesting! Once I ran as an Administrative user from
the beginning (right click Resharper setup -> Run As Administrator ->
Accept UAC elevation) setup completed normally. It seems that the
automatic UAC elevation I was using before was still not allowing your
install utility to be copied to C:\Windows\Installer (why not Temporary
files, out of interest? :) and further the setup program did not catch
this failure (and report a permissions error) and just tried to execute
the utility. I'm not quite sure how I managed to install ReSharper
before, given that it was on exactly the same computer :).

So, it's just a Vista compatibility issue (maybe it was only tested on
machines with UAC turned off? Or there could be some other contributing
factor on my PC..?).

Thanks a lot for your assistance in debugging this, I'm glad I can use
ReSharper again! It's been hard managing without it :)

Hello Max,

that's really odd. Could you please tell how was the ReSharper setup file
you were running named? There was definitely a Vista UAC issue in older builds
of ReSharper (probably even before 2.5 was released) but it was solved by
simply renaming ReSharper setup executable into *setup.exe, since it is believed
that Vista automatically does UAC elevation for executables named in this
manner.

Hi Dmitry,

My setup file is called "ReSharper-VS2005-2.5.0.exe" since I store all
useful setup programs in a regularly named hierachy of folders on my PC.
I guess this is why I experienced the problem!

I think the approved way to request elevation is by making use of a
manifest file, as described at
http://community.bartdesmet.net/blogs/bart/archive/2006/10/28/Windows-Vista-_2D00_-Demand-UAC-elevation-for-an-application-by-adding-a-manifest-using-mt.exe.aspx
- this would work even if the end user renames the executable. This is
probably better since it is suprising for a setup to stop working just
because of the rename :-).

Thanks,
Max

Hello Max,

yes, I think it would be better if we add such a manifest to the 2.5 installer.
I've submitted a request
for this: http://www.jetbrains.net/jira/browse/RSRP-38116 . Fortunately,
in the brand new installer of ReSharper 3.0
this problem should not exist, as it doesn't invoke custom installation actions.

That sounds great! I look forward to using 3.0 :-).
