[220] Show Code Coverage Coloring is messed up.

In VS2005 Team Edition for developers has test and code coverage tools. It
has options to show code coverage coloring that shows which code is covered
by test and with not. In 220 the color is messed up. It just removes part of
default coloring for text editor.
Thanks

Hello Shimon,

I'm not sure but may be this problem is related to the well known issue with
colors in Whidbey
(search this newsgroup if I've never heard about it). If this is so, the
problem will go away after installing
a hotfix from Microsoft (not released yet). Does it happen when you disable
ReSharper?
Thanks.

Well. It first appeared in 220. But when I returned to 217 it came back. But
by 221 it was gone for good even fix/reinstall didn't help.

Yes. I uninstalled and it did come back. But for some reason I have totally
different colors assigned to the settings. Used to be green, yellow and
white not some kind of blue(for runned, and partly runned ), some kind of
red (for not runned) all this I could fix through color settings.

And then I reinstalled 221 and colors don't show anymore.
I checked if this install changed the colors that I set and it didn't but
they won't show in text editor.
Thanks.

I have the same problem after installing 221, the Code Coverage Coloring in
the Team Suite Edition does not work anymore, if I enable to show code
coverage the entire file is just black, if I disable the Show Code Coverage
option the Resharper Coloring comes back..If i uninstall Resharper the
coloring for Code Coverage is shown properly..

Thanks,
Krishna

After further researching the difference in the Font and Colors dialog
before and after installing Resharper, I noticed that the following three
Display Items for Text Editor are removed after installing Resharper, they
are the ones used for color coding by the Code Coverage tool in the Team
Suite Editon of VS 2005

Coverage Not Touched Area
Coverage Partially Touched Area
Coverage Touched Area

Is there a way to reenable them or add them manualy after installing
ReSharper ?

Thanks,
Krishna

Hello Shimon,

I suggest to wait for a hotfix from Microsoft that solves the problem with
colors. At least the issue
you're suffering from resembles this problem.

Yes. I uninstalled and it did come back. But for some reason I have
totally different colors assigned to the settings. Used to be green,
yellow and white not some kind of blue(for runned, and partly runned
), some kind of red (for not runned) all this I could fix through
color settings.

And then I reinstalled 221 and colors don't show anymore.
I checked if this install changed the colors that I set and it didn't
but
they won't show in text editor.
Thanks.

Hello Krishna,

doesn't running 'devenv /setup' bring the missing entries back? I really
have no idea how
they could be removed, as ReSharper doesn't remove any entries except for
those it
created.

After further researching the difference in the Font and Colors dialog
before and after installing Resharper, I noticed that the following
three Display Items for Text Editor are removed after installing
Resharper, they are the ones used for color coding by the Code
Coverage tool in the Team Suite Editon of VS 2005

Coverage Not Touched Area
Coverage Partially Touched Area
Coverage Touched Area
Is there a way to reenable them or add them manualy after installing
ReSharper ?

Thanks,
Krishna

Hello Krishna,

devenv.exe has also an option for logging package load information to a file.
Could you please try running it with that option enabled when the problem
is repeatable and send us the log file?

Hello Dmitry,

I've attached the Registry Key file from the location you mentioned below.
Now that i see the list in that registry location, I don't see any Display
Items prefixed with Resharper either in the Font and Color dialog. I've
already tried devenv /setup and also tried reseting the settings too from
the command line. Thanks for looking into this issue. Let me know if you
need additional information.

Thanks,
Krishna

Hello Krishna,

I've just run into this problem myself: all ReSharper entries in Fonts and
Colors
dialog were missing. I spent some time on it was finally able to fix it.
I'm not completely
sure what exactly made the trick, but what I learned from that is:

1) The problem seems to be caused by some bad caching of Fonts and Colors
entries inside VS
2) In order to reset VS to its initial state, I cleaned up several places
a) Deleted completely the HKCU\Software\Microsoft\VisualStudio\8.0 registry
key
b) Deleted the whole folder Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\VisualStudio\8.0 c) Deleted the whole folder Documents and Settings\]]>\Application
Data\Microsoft\VisualStudio\8.0

None of the above places contain a valuable information so they all can be
safely deleted. After deletion I run 'devenv /setup', and - o, miracle! ReSharper
Fonts and Colors entries are back!

It'd be great if you can repeat my experiment and notify me of your results.
Thanks.

Hello Dmitry,

I tried the steps you've mentioned below, unfortunately, without any luck
:(, Resharper Add-in itself vanished after following the steps, i am
stumped, i had to revert back to the original settings that i had backed up
to get back VS to its original shape, any other ideas?,

Thanks,
Krishna

Hello Krishna,

that's weird - another recent post (By Lionel Guilhou) witnesses that the
method works.
Don't his actions lead to the same result on your machine?

P.S. Most likely, ReSharper vanished because it was installed for the current
user only. The remedy is
simply to reinstall it, and better install it for all users next time.

Hello Dmitry,

I tried the steps you've mentioned below, unfortunately, without any
luck :(, Resharper Add-in itself vanished after following the steps, i
am stumped, i had to revert back to the original settings that i had
backed up to get back VS to its original shape, any other ideas?,

Thanks,
Krishna

Hi Dmitry,

You were right, I had installed ReSharper just for me, this might have been the issue with VS not loading the Add-in.

I did further research and its probably more related to this (your) post in the Microsoft forum http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=57870&SiteID=1 about External Markers, sure enough if I remove or restrict it to be under 30 Highlighting works with Code Coverage too (Code Coverage and Testing tools that come with the Team Suite add their own specific External Markers so this restriction of 30 is very limiting), I ended up cleaning up some of the Marker that is less used and having the list to be under 30 (there were 65 entries, ReSharper had 31 and the rest 34 by others). I then cleared the Cache and restored the settings from the Application Data and other directories. Now everything works as is. What a mess :(, Would there be a fix for this or the hot fix i see in other posts would fix this too? Thanks for all the help.

Regards,
Krishna

Hello Krishna,

the MS hotfix everyone here is talking about is intended to fix the problem
with wrong colors when
there are more than 30 external markers (which is always the case when you
have ReSharper installed). This hotfix has not been published yet, but it
should be made available soon. We'll include it into the installation package
as soon as it is made (re)distributable. I think it should also cure the
problem you're experiencing.

Hi Dmitry,

You were right, I had installed ReSharper just for me, this might have
been the issue with VS not loading the Add-in.

I did further research and its probably more related to this (your)
post in the Microsoft forum
http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=57870&SiteID=1
about External Markers, sure enough if I remove or restrict it to be
under 30 Highlighting works with Code Coverage too (Code Coverage and
Testing tools that come with the Team Suite add their own specific
External Markers so this restriction of 30 is very limiting), I ended
up cleaning up some of the Marker that is less used and having the
list to be under 30 (there were 65 entries, ReSharper had 31 and the
rest 34 by others). I then cleared the Cache and restored the settings
from the Application Data and other directories. Now everything works
as is. What a mess :(, Would there be a fix for this or the hot fix i
see in other posts would fix this too? Thanks for all the help.

Regards,
Krishna

Hi Dmitry,

Thanks !, Since the issues are related, if the hotfix removes the artificial
restriction of 30, we should be good.

Krishna

In VS2005 Team Edition for developers has test and code coverage tools. It
has options to show code coverage coloring that shows which code is
covered by test and with not. In 220 the color is messed up. It just
removes part of default coloring for text editor.
Thanks
