Resharper items in Resharper menu are all greyed out.

Greetings,

I downloaded and installed the R#4.0 nightly build, installed it and everything in the resharper menu is disabled in VS.Net 2008. Nothing appears in the tools->Add-ins menu either.

Prior to this I had R#3.1 (evaluation) installed on my machine and it expired (I rarely used it on the machine). Once expired, the Resharper menu was all greyed out and I couldn't even enter a license number, I saw others who had this issue but no resolution was available, that I could see.

Thoughts, comments?

thanks

Hello Craig,

could you please try install another VS add-in (say DevExpress CodeRush -http://www.devexpress.com/Products/NET/IDETools/CodeRush/)
and check if it appears in the Add-In Manager?

Thanks in advance.

Greetings,

Installed code rush and it works fine.

On a seperate note: Your Password Reminder functionality of this site is broken. I had to create a new account in order to post as I couldn't crack my password and your password reminder page does nothing (at least it didn't for me when I entered my username).

Is there the R# add-in listed under Tools->AddIns?

Does it help to do "devenv.com /setup /resetskippkgs"?

I'm having the same problem. Also, I have a licence for version 3.1, but even that displays the same behaviour (in VS2005).

I've also tried running the suggested command and it completed without errors but did not fix the problem.

The last build that I tried installing was 4.0 #767. Is there another build that perhaps I should try?

Many thanks

Same problem here VS 2005 Resharper 3.0.2 & 3.1 lincensed. I have recently uninstalled SQL Server 2005 & 2000 which I have come accross being the doing of many people with resharper problems.

Greetings,

Tried that, no effect. Not listed in add-ins menu, all resharper items greyed out.

Any other ideas?

I'm having the same 'greyed out' problem with the nightly build 775 on VS2008.

It is in ->Tools->Add-In Manager and when I open my solution it definately caches all the clases (takes a while because it's a big project but it does finish..230MB memory).

The sidebar precompilation color warnings seem to work fine but all resharper options on the context menu and the VS menu are greyed out.

PLEASE provide a fix for this soon, developing without resharper is like watching black and white fuzzy TV compared to a new hi-def LCD...

I know you say that the nightly build in unreliable....usually I would wait for 'Stable' version but the 3.1 version I was using with VS2008 wasn't stable either. It didn't crash but I was finding that 'Find Usages' (a feature I use all the time) was unreliable, often reporting no usages....when there clearly was usages, like on the next line.

Thanks!

Note also:

I've noticed that all the features seem to work fine using keyboard shortcuts....it's just that they are not available via the context menu (because they are greyed out)

Similar story here (build 777)
The main R# menu works ok, but the context sensitive one is mostly greyed out.
e.g. Find Usages, works from ReSharper menu but not when I right click something.

I have the same issue. The context menu is all disabled but all the other menus and keyboard shortcuts work fine. I think the issue just showed when I updated from 771 to 775.

context menu greyed out, but shortcuts and main menu working fine (happened moving from 767 to 775)

Dmitry,

I'm seeing the same issue with the latest 3.1 for Visual Studio 2008. I tried the devenv /setup & devenv /resetskippkgs and that didn't work. Is this fixed in the 4.0 nightly build only? If so, when will it be fixed in 3.1 for VS2008?

Thanks,
Nisi

Hi Dmitry -

this problem was fixed just yesterday, thank you for reporting.

Unfortunately for me, I'm still seeing the problem. Actually, I've seen it a number of times on different machines, but each one is subtly different.

  • On one of my machines, my 30 day trial licence expired, and all the menus etc. were grayed out. When I uninstalled ReSharper and re-installed the most recent build at the time (775), I got a fresh 30 day trial licence, and all the menus and functionality worked again (thank goodness!)

  • On one of my other machines, all the menus and functionality is unavailable, and it has been for some time. When everything first became unavailable, I still had at least 10 days left on the trial licence. Unlike what other people have commented in this thread, functionality was not available to me via the shortcut keys. Even using the latest build (779) I continue to see this behaviour.

On the second machine, I have been installing every night's builds starting from about 767, and yet ReSharper still remains completely unavailable.

From what I can see, the only difference between the two machines is that ReSharper does not appear in the the Add-ins list in Visual Studio on the second machine. Running the re-register command posted earlier in this thread has not helped.

Is there something else I can try on this machine? Is there any information that I could collect for you to help diagnose this problem?

Many thanks -

Hello Gerrod,

unfortunately we still don't know the origin of the problem with ReSharper
disappearing from Add-In Manager. It would help if
you try the following experiment: try to install the following VS add-in

http://visualstudiogallery.com/ExtensionDetails.aspx?ExtensionID=bea9ed59-8857-4032-9666-9af1c1a33969

on the machine exhibiting the problem and check if it
appears in the Add-in Manager. This add-in uses the same registration mechanism
(*.addin files) as ReSharper so if it doesn't work
it may server as an indication that something went wrong with the mechanism.

Thanks!

Thanks Dmitry -

I tried as you suggested and the new add-in also doesn't appear in the add-in manager. I've searched around the internet and learned more than I ever wanted to know about add-in registration in Visual Studio ;-). I've hunted around and checked the settings which I thought relevant (the .addin file is present in the installation directory, and the installation directory appears in the "AutomationOptions/LookInFolders" registry key) - yet still no joy.

Short of re-installing VS on the other machine I'm completely out of ideas.

Thanks again for your help!
/gerrod

PS: As a side note, the value in the registry key mentioned above has a double-backslash before the Bin folder:

C:\Program Files\JetBrains\ReSharper\v4.0\vs9.0
Bin

It doesn't seem to be a problem as ReSharper still works fine (on one of my machines), but just thought you may like to know.

I am also having the same problem with build 777. Here is what I am seeing:
1. I have installed a non-expiring license and that has NOT fixed the problem
2. I do see Resharper listed under Add-In Manager
3. The right mouse-click menu options are pretty much completely disabled (see attachment) HOWEVER it turns out that the corresponding menu option (for a disabled right-mouse click menu option) is available and functional on the menu bar (see attachment).

Seems that the problem is a right-mouse click problem and not an install problem.

Hello Andrew et al,

just to clear the situation, there are two completely different problems
which got attention in this thread:

1) Problem with ReSharper not listed in the Add-In Manager. This is a very
mysterious issue for us, the reason for which
we still don't know. One of few facts we know about this problem is that
when it happens, VS don't list other add-ins in Add-In Manager
too. So it really looks like the Add-In Manager stops working at a certain
point.

I believe Microsoft help is necessary to diagnose and fix this issue.

2) Problem with ReSharper's context menu items always disabled (and items
in other menus work OK). This is a temporary problem that was fixed last
week. Please try to install a newer build to get rid of it.

Thanks.

So which build do you recommend? I am running 777 and it seems to have the problem (778 & 779) are not recommended and my co-worker said that 780 errors on startup and he recommended to stay away from that one - seems that there hasn't been a nightly build since 4/18 (build 780) - not sure if the confluence page isn't getting updated (http://www.jetbrains.net/confluence/display/ReSharper/ReSharper4.0Nightly+Builds) or Jetbrains has suspended nightly builds.

Re: my earlier post about 775 not installing. I removed the previous RS4 and 775 installed ok. When I load a project I get the licence dialog and I click cancel assuming the RS4 beta licence still applies. I can see RS in the Add-In manager and it's enabled. But when I select a source file I no longer have the RS gutter on the right, no green square, nothing. When I open the RS menu most of the items are greyed out including the About menu item which is puzzling. Does all of this fit into the discussion of the menu items being unavailable? As I say, some are enabled and some are not.

I installed 781. I've now got RS 'working' again. The menu items are now enabled and the green square is back on parade.

Peter,

Cancelling this license dialog means you don't have neither ReSharper
license nor license server. At this point ReSharper gets disabled, then You
are to enable it via Tools|Add-In manager and the dialog will be displayed.
Chose appropriate option (free evaluation, I guess) and ReSharper will be
working.

Regarding the problem where ReSharper disappears from the Add-in manager and then stops working completely: I have uninstalled and re-installed Visual Studio and ReSharper on the affected computer, and ReSharper is working again.

A brutal approach, but it was definately worth it!

Hello Gerrod,

it's good that you're able to use ReSharper again. Still I believe it's important
to diagnose the problem but I can hardly figure out
how we can do that without assistance from MS. I actually spent two days
working remotely on a machine (provided by one of our users)
exhibiting this problem and all without luck.
