Resharper 4.0.740:: Visual Studio Just Exits!!!!

Hi,

I have download and installed the latest build of Resharper 4.0.

Now whenever I compile our project, 1 time out of 3, Visual Studio will just close with no warning or error message. I am afraid to compile now as not to corrupt files by this sudden termination of visual studio.

We are using VisualStduio 2008 RTM, and the project is a C# web project.

I went back to 3.1 and all is OK. It never did this with any 3.x build.

Thanks.

I suggest checking the Application Log in Event Viewer (in Control Panel ->
Administrative Tools). There are likely one or more error entries for
Visual Studio or .NET Runtime that could provide some details.

Cheers,
Mike

OK, here is the error:

.NET Runtime version 2.0.50727.1434 - Fatal Execution Engine Error (79FFEE24) (80131506)

Interesting, I've gotten that myself a few times recently, though it seemed
to be related to some third party UI components. I had tried disabling R#,
but that had no effect. I ultimately ended up blindly uninstalling
components until the problem disappeared. Clearly there's a bug in VS2008,
because no component or add-in should be able to cause the IDE to crash like
that. Even so, it still indicates that an addin or component was doing
something wrong, or the crash would not have occurred.

After I uninstall R# 4.x and re-install 3.1.x I never have a single crash.

To me it only happens with the 4.x builds

I am now having this issue when I open an .aspx page with last night's R#
4.0 build:

.NET Runtime version 2.0.50727.1434 - Fatal Execution Engine Error

As an addendum, the aforementioned ASP.NET solution also makes use of LINQ
to SQL and LINQ to ADO Entity Framework Beta 3 (the latter is replacing the
former, which will be removed later). I thought it might be relevant
considering LINQ support just worked its way into the nightly build.

Have you tried the MS hotfix
https://connect.microsoft.com/VisualStudio/Downloads/DownloadDetails.aspx?DownloadID=10826&wa=wsignin1.0
I've mentioned earlier in the group?

We applied the Hotfix at our company, but no difference. I still don't see why this is considered a solution when the behavior only occurs with Resharper 4, not with Resharper 3, or with Resharper disabled. R#4 is doing something that causes this. We are trying out CodeSmart hereas a potential replacement because this bug has been known for over two weeks already without any sign of a fix.

Hello Tim,

Please don't treat early development builds of ReSharper 4 as a released
software. We are quite busy with LINQ support now and working on other planned
issues now. We will address this for sure, but we can't just rush over every
found problem. This just means ReSharper nightly builds are not suitable
for some people at the moment.

Sincerely,
Ilya Ryzhenkov

Yes, I installed that hotfix, and it still crashes when I rebuild.

And I agree with Ilia, we shouldn't be treating this like a release build. It is only an EAP, so that is why I will be running 3.1.x until this is resolved.

It is a shame really, because I kind of like to not have my extensions marked in red anymore...

I also crashes for me. I will have to revert to 3.1 until this is fixed.

I have been given a fix by the support team.

See if this help you as well.

"Please try to rename the
'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\VisualStudio\9.0\Extenders' registry
key (to 'Extenders2' for instance) and restart Visual Studio"

It seem to be working for me so far

Partial FIX Possibly. :)

I had the same situation as all in this forum.

Fatal Execution Engine Error (79FEC5F0) (80131506)

This only happens with 1 of my web solutions. Other solutions, including other web solutions worked, meaning they did not exit. I installed the latest nightly build 3/17/2008 which did not work. Then, for some strange and unknown reason, I when to all my projects to make sure I had all my code checked in. This was most likely driven through fear of losing it all.

Environment
Vista Ent 64bit
Visual Studio 9.0 Team System
Team System Server (Source Control)
ReSharper 4.0 3/17/2008 Build

Once I checked in the code using the team system server I noticed that one of the files I am checking in did not exist. Then I realized that I deleted that section and moved it. So I undid the pending change. Then I saw another file and checked it in, “vwd.webinfo”. After that the project worked.

The project loads great for now. My guess is that either ReSharper 4 has an issue with files in flux with source control or the Team System was the problem. The Team System is most likely built using the addon extensions and whatever problem ReSharper is having is similar to this one.

Hope this helps someone.

Bryan
