Future IDE and Plugins?

Hello Sam,

the future IDE will definitely include support for plug-ins. However, the
plug-in interfaces
will not be compatible with those of VS, since it is neither technically
feasible nor reasonable
for us to support the same plug-in interfaces as in VS.

It would be nice if the plans for the IDE could include implementing a
VS2003-alike compatibility interface for plugins so we could use
TestDriven.Net, existing source-control solutions, Clover, etc.

Not having written a VS2003 plugin I don't know if this is even
possible. If not, have you/do you plan to talk with any of the popular
plugin authors about supporting your IDE?

Not having worked with IntelliJ before, can I reasonably expect TestDriven.Net to integrate with it rather quickly? I know you can't speak for other devs, but does IntelliJ garner decent plugin support? Will you be offering to support the devs of popular plugins a bit to make sure they make an appearance in your .net IDE? Or will you be offering competitive functionality to TestDriven.Net built into the IDE?

First of all, by "IntelliJ" your probably mean ReSharper IDE? "IntelliJ IDEA"
is our Java IDE and it has nothing to do with .NET.

Yes, we plan to support developers of popular plug-ins. For example, we plan
to have a centralized plug-in storage where authors can submit their plugins
to. This storage will be easily searchable and you will be able to browse
it and download plugins right from the IDE.

Also even the first version of the IDE will have a decent support for unit
tests so you will hardly need integration with TestDriven.Net.

I applaud your efforts to make the IDE pluggable. I haven't done much with
VS.NET add-ins but from what I hear they are a far cry from Eclipse's model.

I don't know what type of an architecture you are planning on building from
but I'd like to see something along the lines of Eclipse. The more open
your platform is to 3rd parties / open source projects the more developers
are going to drop VS.NET for JetBrains.... good luck guys and hurry up I
really need a good IDE VS.NET 2003 is KILLING me.

(Well, I guess it's ok with Resharper 1.5...) still seems like it's crashing
an awful lot still :(

it's off topic here, but could you elaborate more on what crashes are
you experiencing? Have you submitted any exceptions?
